What is a Headache?

A headache is defined by any pain in the head and neck area. 90% of Americans will or have experienced a headache at some point in their life.

Most common headaches include: tension headaches, migraines and sinus headaches

• Tension headaches cause mild to moderate pain and are quicker to resolve.
• Migraines are moderate to severe in pain and are often characterized as “pounding” or “throbbing”. Migraines can last for hours and can occur several times per month.
• Sinus headaches are also mild to moderate in pain located in the sinus area in the front of the forehead to the bridge of the nose.
• Cluster headaches are rare. Only .1% of the population experience cluster headaches. Cluster headaches are the most severe and are often described as attacking pain located behind the eyes or in the eye region. Cluster headaches can occur several times per day and last for weeks.

What are the Causes of Headaches?

Headaches are the result of specific nerves of the head muscle and blood vessels sending a pain signal to the brain. We are not sure though why these "pain signals" are activated.

Common causes for headaches include:

• Head trauma (getting hit in the head)
• Emotional stress
• Lack of sleep
• Eyestrain, neck or back strain
• Medication, alcohol
• Hereditary
