How do I relieve my stress-induced headaches?

There are a lot of things that you can do to relieve your headaches that are natural and effective.

  • Get adjusted by your chiropractor – Whether your headaches are coming from your joints or your muscles, your nervous system is being affected and it is not happy. With abnormal functioning joints from postural stress, your body tenses up the surrounding muscles to provide more stability. You get a muscle spasm, which puts pressure on the surrounding tissues and they send pain messages to your brain. Also, surrounding blood vessels could be affected, causing increased pressure in your head and resulting in a headache. Your chiropractor will check your neck and if needed, adjust it. This increases the motion of your neck, decreases the muscle spasm, and decreases your headache.
  • Get a massage – Massage is extremely effective in alleviating tight muscles, increasing blood flow, and relieving stress that may be contributing to your tight muscles in the first place.
  • Put an ice pack on the back of your neck – Ice reduces inflammation, and decreases pain. Never leave an ice pack on for more than 20 minutes and always have a towel between it and your skin.
  • Take a nap – Sleep is essential for not only stress relief, but so that your body can recover mentally and physically day to day. At night, you should be getting between 7-9 hours of sleep and if you feel that you need it during the day, relax and enjoy a quiet nap.

Headaches are not easy to live with and there is no reason you should be. Get to the cause of the problem and stop the headache before it starts.
